Why I Want to Travel

For me, the subjects of travel and well-being come hand in hand. I believe that you need to feel well in your self in order to travel successfully but that at the same time, travel can really help to shape your well-being. It’s a bit of a catch 22, at least that’s my way of looking at it.

So, I wanted this blog to consider and spend time with both subjects as I think they are so important for one another; which leads me on to the reasoning behind why I want to travel more.

As we are all aware, the brain is a very powerful and complicated organ, unbelievably so. And I sometimes think, why hold back? Let’s be open about and celebrate our thoughts and feelings. Let’s remind each other how powerful this organ is and let’s learn to understand and respect it. Let’s use it.

This basically explains why I want to travel. I want to nourish my brain. I want to feed and expand it, to learn and discover. To be inspired and in turn be able to inspire, to make memories and avoid having regrets.

I want to become a more well-rounded person; to indulge in and try new and varied things, to get to know myself better and to immerse myself in other cultures, to feel pride and accomplishment.

I’m keen to reach for more and to feel more in tune with the world in which I live, to become a better person who can teach and advise. I feel that this will help me to to feel content, to reach old age and feel I’ve lived – at least the way I want to – everybody wants different things from life. I am more than aware that many people around the world are not able to travel or some may not desire to. Everybody comes from a different kind of world with different levels of opportunities. I am from a working class town in Northern England – the part that is much more neglected and in many areas, poverty-stricken in comparison with the south. Our single-parent family struggled very much and it can be harder to work your way up in life, but somehow, I’ve been able to utilise the wonders of budget airlines and accommodation and make it work for me as much as possible and I feel very grateful for that.

That’s it.

I want a lot from life, a lot more than I used to want. And there are of course other ways to start shaping your life a little more and learning about the world – such as reading. This is an incredible form of escapism and offers the opportunity to expand your knowledge of other countries and peoples around the world. Some may rather explore the world this way and that is an incredible choice if that works better for you.

I personally feel that experiencing things first hand helps me to learn better because, to immerse myself in the sensory experiences where you can see, smell, hear, taste and touch, allows me to better absorb myself with new knowledge.

So, I guess the fundamental reason I want to travel is to learn and discover, so that I eventually become the selfless, well balanced person that I’ve always wanted to be. Then I’ll feel truly accomplished and like I have a fully deserved place in the world, like my life has meaning and purpose.

Once I’ve reached this stage, I can become even more pro-active with helping others and making some sort of difference in this vast, complex world of ours.

Here is a little quote I put together to reflect what I’m trying to say here:

To learn is to teach,
To receive is to give,
To love yourself is to love,
To be inspired is to inspire,
To help yourself is to help

Obviously, let’s not kid ourselves that travel will solve everything, it certainly won’t but personally for me, it’s going to really help. Maybe there’s something different that you really want to do more of that you know will make you a fuller, more satisfied person.

Start doing it. You have to put yourself first in order to be able to make a real difference. NEVER feel guilty for wanting to travel or do anything to make your life better. But it is definitely about getting the right balance and thinking about how, at some point, we may use our privileges to help others in some way, however small.
